On the Differentiation of Plasmacytopoietic Tissue of Rat-Spleen

Abstract
Plasmacytogenesis was studied in the male albino rats, from one week embryo to 3 month old ages, on the stand point of natural cytogenesis of plasma cells in the spleen. The conclusions are as follows;
1) Lymphocytes and lymph follicles appear in the late embryonic stage, and predominantly proliferate about 18th day after birth. But germinal centers are formed around 26th day.
2) Extramedullary hematopoiesis of spleen is extremely marked during embryonic stage that the histologic picture of spleen appears like bone marrow in this stage. But the activity is markedly declined after birth and gradually disappeared until the end of 1 month of age.
3) Plasma cells of spleen appear, for the first time, about 26-30 days of age, and their location is mainly around the trabecula and in the subcapsular spaces.
4) The origin of the plasma cells seems to be reticulum cells and the beginning of the plasmacytopoiesis would be initiated by the presence of antigen in the blood stream.
